Lighting is one of the most important aspects in the area of interior design.
We all know that light is a crucial thing for people’s lives and besides natural sunlight, the artificial lightning still is widely and most frequently used on a daily basis.
A proper decoration, and a bare necessity as well. Good lighting really can do wonders for a particular space.
And have you ever wondered why lightning can be so important, not only to designers but for the people as well? – it is absolutely normal sometimes to have that kind of questions popping out from nowhere.
Before we start analyzing different types of lightning and their use, let’s take a moment to mention the basics of light.
What is light?
It is actually, a form of electromagnetic energy. The visible light that we are able to see it is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Light gets transmitted in waves. In fact, it is a similar way of transmissions, such as radio and TV signal as well. Each color of light has its own wavelength and when all colors are mixed and combined, we get a mixture well known as white light.
This is a very important segment to understand when working with lightning.
Purpose of Light, Lighting
There are many reasons why we use light in our everyday life activities.
Working from home would be a sci-fi book scenario if we didn’t have the opportunity to switch on the lights. Reading and writing are included in this ‘package’ as well.
But not only work and hobbies, lightning helps in creating an area of comfort, a warmer and cozier atmosphere, an aesthetic effect in defining highlights or shadows. Light can also be one of the safety metods, especially in working facilities where there are many workers that come here in shifts, so they need appropriate lightning to complete their daily tasks.
Indeed, light has a wide use and an inevitable meaning for our everyday surroundings.
Importance of Light
Without lightning, we wouldn’t be able to experience space and architecture to the max. This means that we won’t be able to see our work, no matter how hard we tried to develop and fulfill our concept for a particular interior design project.
Good lightning surely brings a warm and well-functioning atmosphere in our homes. Therefore, it is a very important part of the design because with the appropriate lightning you could easily accentuate certain parts from the rooms, you could develop new and different atmospheres to enjoy in every day.
So, no matter how hard you tried with the design, you’ll never have a finished one until you choose the right lighting for it. It is the most important finishing touch a designer could add.
How to…a Proper Lighting
There really are plenty of ways how to implement lighting in your home.
First of all, try to figure out the height of the ceiling. Knowing the right numbers could save your life, literally!
It is important to know the height of the room, especially if you tend to put hanging lights in there.
The light shouldn’t be hanged too low or too high, and in order to complete this part properly, you should first stick to the tape measure and write down those life-saving numbers!
Layers of Lighting
But, in order to actually have a proper lighting, the height of a particular room isn’t just everything.
Design nearly always includes working in triads and groups things into three main parts. Lightning isn’t an exception, so we finally got to the part where we could group different types of lights and lightning into three groups:
- Ambient lighting
- Task lighting
- Accent lighting
You can choose which type of lighting you should pick, considering your necessities, activities and of course, your personal preferences.
The first layer of home lighting is the ambient lighting. It is called ‘general lighting’ because it surely is the most basic layer of lighting and with its help, you can easily get a bright, natural, and glowing room.
This is the natural light that enters through the windows and also, the light that imitates natural light, such as artificial lighting.
Other types of ambient lighting that may catch your eye are:
- All ceiling fixtures (chandeliers are included here as well)
- Recessed ceiling lights
- Ceiling fans with light kits
- Wall sconces
Try to remember that ambient lighting is just the first layer and in order to complete the design successfully, you shouldn’t stop it here. The other layers of lighting are needed as well, so why not consider to ‘think outside the box’ and try something new and yet so important.
The second layer of lighting provides localized lights wherever there is needed more and precise light.
The most frequently used task lightings may be:
- Desk lamps
- Table lamps
- Under counter lamps
- Vanity lights
- Swing arm lamps
- Pendant lights
- Adjustable floor lamps, etc.
This means that task lighting is usually used in working areas or spaces, in order to provide you the extra light for your favorite activities.
But let’s focus on the aesthetics for a little bit – these lightings can be decoration as well and they can instantly change the mood of a specific area from the rooms where they are placed in.
It’s quite important for you to pick or to keep in mind your favorite activities. This would really help you decide which type of task lighting would be most appropriate for your rooms.
And besides practical, tend to choose elegant, minimalistic, and timeless designs, because – classic is always in.
Some people may think that this type of lighting is actually a ‘mood lighting’, but this last layer of lighting is much more of it. It can be used for highlighting areas or surfaces from your home.
This kind of lighting is often used in museums, for showing off some photographs, monumental pieces and pieces of art in general.
Accent lighting can surely be used as a décor and believe it or not, there are included:
- Picture lights
- Can lights
- Wall sconces
- Niche lighting
- Directed track (recessed lights), etc
One should never underestimate the power of the good lighting and its ability to bring up the desired ambient. Besides general lighting, try experiencing something new and look up all additional layers of lighting that are available in the marketplace.
